ANOTHER VISIT TO THE NURSING HOME

‘Who have you seen?’ you demand
As soon as I enter.

‘I’m sorry – it’s been a bad week –
No-one you know.’

I think of the others
In their compassionate prisons:
‘If you turned up,
She wouldn’t recognize you.’

‘Well there’s not much point
Your coming here
If you haven’t seen anyone I know.’

‘True enough,’ I think
And sit down
For another visit.
